Market Outlook

 

Lettuce:

The lettuce market is steady and just a few dollars above the bottom. We continue to see good quality on inbound.

Leaf:

Romaine and romaine hearts are steady. Both green and red leaf markets are steady to up a few dollars depending on shipper. We are seeing mostly good quality on inbound.

Broccoli:

The broccoli market is steady and at the bottom for next week. Quality has been good on inbound.

Cauliflower:

The cauliflower market is steady for the coming week. Quality has been very good.

Carrots:

The carrot market is steady out of Mexico with good quality. Canada has just begun harvest on new crop. We will be transitioning to Canadian product.

Celery:

The celery market is about steady. We have Eastern as well as well as California in stock. We are seeing good quality on inbound.

Strawberries:

Quality has improved over the last week and we have good quality in stock. Costs will be steady for next week.

Potatoes:

The Idaho potato market is pretty steady across the board. Overall, quality has been very good on storage Burbanks. We should see new crop Norkotah starting to ship from Idaho on or about 8/15/16. We expect new crop to be $2-$4 higher depending on the item #2’s will be very tight with new crop.

Onions:

The yellow onion market is adjusting down with Idaho and Oregon getting started and New Mexico looking to wrap up. Reds are about steady. We are seeing good quality on new crop California/New Mexico product. We will look to transition back to Idaho/ Oregon beginning week 33 or 34.

Citrus:

The California lemon market remains very strong with supplies short. Quality on the fruit has been good to very good. We have good quality Chilean fruit available in most sizes. Chile will be winding down and Mexico will ramp up. California oranges are in pretty good supply across all product sizes, but small fruit will likely move up in cost with schools starting. We are seeing good quality on inbound. The Lime market is very active with tropical storms hitting the growing regions. We are seeing mostly good quality on inbound.

Cucumbers:

The cucumber market is up a few dollars on Selects and very active and short on Supers. We are seeing product from New Jersey, Michigan, Pa, New York and Canada. We are seeing mostly good quality across the board, with an occasional soft end.

Peppers:

The green pepper market is steady with good supplies available in New Jersey and Michigan, and Canada has started in a small way.

Tomatoes:

The round tomato market is slightly lower for next week. Very few tomatoes available in the East. Grapes are steady with product available in New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia. Cherry tomatoes are about steady. The Roma market has adjusted down slightly.

Recipe of the Week

Grilled Scallops with Honeydew-Avocado Salsa

Ingredients

Finely grated lime zest, plus 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling

1 1/2 pounds honeydew melon, rind removed and melon cut into 1/4-inch dice (2 1/2 cups)

1 Hass avocado, cut into 1/4-inch dice

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

2 pounds large sea scallops

Directions

1.Light a grill. In a large bowl, combine the lime zest and juice with the 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Using a rubber spatula, gently fold in the diced honeydew melon and avocado. Season the salsa with salt and black pepper.

2.Drizzle the scallops with olive oil and season with salt and black pepper. Grill over moderately high heat, turning once, until nicely charred and just cooked through, 3 to 4 minutes per side. Transfer the scallops to plates, spoon the salsa alongside and serve.
