Market Outlook

Lettuce: 

The lettuce market is about steady from last week. We continue to see good quality on inbound.

Leaf: 

Romaine is about steady and romaine hearts are up slightly for next week. Green leaf and red leaf markets are steady. We are seeing mostly good quality on inbound.

Broccoli:

The broccoli market steady, but higher than we have seen for some time. Product is a little short in California and some of the regional deals are slowing down.  Quality has been good on inbound.

Cauliflower:

The cauliflower market is moving up a few dollars. Quality has been very good.

Carrots:

The carrot market is a little active going into next week out of Canada, and we will see costs move up a few dollars for next week. Product has been very nice.

Celery:

The celery market is about steady. We are seeing good quality on inbound. We have both California and Canadian product in stock.

Strawberries: 

Markets are about steady from last week. Quality has been good.

Potatoes:

The Idaho potato market has remained steady for next week. Product will most likely remain steady over the next few weeks until new crop Burbank’s start.

Onions:

The onion market has remained steady with no change for next week. Quality has been outstanding.

 Citrus:

The California lemon market remains very strong, with supplies very short. Sunkist is very short on fancy and choice fruit. Quality on the fruit has been good to very good. We have good quality Mexican fruit available. California oranges are in pretty good supply on large sizes, but small fruit is tight and costs have moved up with schools starting. We are seeing good quality on inbound. The Lime market is about steady. We are seeing fair to good quality on inbound.

Cucumbers:

The cucumber market has leveled off now with decent volume coming out of New Jersey. Overall, quality has been fair to good.

Peppers:

The green pepper market has moved up in cost in New Jersey. Michigan and some of the other regional deals are done or about done. Georgia will start in a few weeks.

 Tomatoes:

The round tomato market is steady from last week. Very few quality tomatoes available in the East. Grapes and cherries are steady, but high as well, with product coming up short. Virginia and Maryland are slowing up fast. The Roma market has adjusted down with better supplies available in California.

 

Recipe of the Week

Pear, blue cheese and walnut salad with a maple syrup vinaigrette

Ingredients

2 generous handfuls rocket (leaves of your choice)

2 pears, sliced

150g blue cheese, broken into chunks

50g crushed walnuts for sprinkling

dressing

60ml olive oil (4 Tbs)

30 ml red wine vinegar (2 Tbs)

20ml maple syrup (1 Tbs and 1 tsp)

1/2 tsp Dijon mustard

salt

Instructions

Place the salad ingredients in a bowl or arrange on a platter.

Mix the vinaigrette dressing ingredients in a small jar and shake well before drizzling over the salad.
