 Transition and Product Delays 

Growers are transitioning from Yuma, AZ to Salinas, CA next week. Over the next two weeks, we expect delayed product availability as growers and processors work on trying to catch up from transition. 

Lettuce: 

Lettuce markets are active and sold out. There is AOG triggers on value-added items. Yuma is expected to finish production this week. Production in Huron is expected to run three weeks longer and the quality is good overall, with weights of approximately 39-42 pounds. Yuma lettuce has misshapen heads, discoloration, and brown bottoms. Salinas has light production. Quality is fair to good. 

Leaf: 

– Romaine markets are active. Yuma is expected to finish this week due to warm temperatures and Salinas production is moderate to light. Huron has moderate to light production. Common defects include fringe burn, blistering, and peeling. There are AOG triggers on value-added items. Quality is fair to good. 

– Romaine Heart markets are active. Yuma is expected to finish this week due to warm temperatures and Salinas production is moderate to light. Huron has moderate to light production. Common defects include fringe burn, blistering, and peeling. There are AOG triggers on value-added items. Quality is fair to good. 

– Green and Red Leaf markets are active. Yuma is expected to finish this week due to warm temperatures and Salinas production is moderate to light. Huron has moderate to light production. Common defects include fringe burn, blistering, and peeling. There are AOG triggers on Green Leaf value-added items. Quality is fair to good. 

Lettuce Tender Leaf: 

Supplies continue to be available for parsley, cilantro, spinach, spring mix and arugula due to the current and recent warm weather in Yuma. The weather in the growing region will continue to be good into the weekend. Overall, quality is expected to be fair. 

Broccoli: 

Markets are active and sold out. Broccoli supplies continue to be extremely limited in Yuma as we approach transition. Salinas supplies have started slowly. Quality is fair to good. 

Cauliflower: 

Markets are active and sold out. Demand exceeds supply as we approach the end of the Yuma season. Salinas has just begun this week. Quality is fair to good. 

Carrots: 

– Cello and Loose markets are elevated but steady. Quality is good. 

– Value-add Snack Carrots are steady. Quality is good. 

Celery: 

Celery markets are steady. Santa Maria, Oxnard, and Florida will have plenty of supplies throughout the week. The quality continues to be good, with only slight seeder being reported. 

Strawberries & Bush Berries: 

– Strawberries are still limited. The weather in California’s growing regions is warming up, which is causing better yields. We should expect better coverage at the end of April. Quality is fair to good. 

– Raspberries markets are still active with light numbers being reported. Easter disrupted transfers out of Central Mexico with the boarder being closed. Production in California will begin approximately 3 weeks. Quality is fair to good. 

– Blueberries markets are steady. Quality is good. 

– Blackberries markets are still active. There is still an acute shortage of this item coming out of the Central Mexico region. West Coast production should increase in two to three more weeks. Quality is fair. 

Potatoes: 

The potato market is strong and starting to tighten up. 40ct through 80ct are becoming very tight. We will be in old crop for another 4 months, Quality is good 

Onions: 

The onion market is very tight with heavy rain in Texas and Mexican crop winding down. Overall quality is good. pricing is up. 

Cucumbers: 

– Cucumber market is steady. Quality is good. 

– Euro cucumbers markets are down. Canada crop has started. Quality is good. 

Peppers: 

– Green bells markets are steady. Quality is good. 

– Red Pepper markets are steady. Quality is fair to good. 

Herbs: 

– Basil: We are still seeing quality issues and some availability issues as well. Overall, quality is fair to good. 

Citrus 

– Orange markets are up and tight on small fruit with significantly less volume. Quality is good. 

– Lemon markets are up. Small fruit is tight due to the past rain increasing fruit size. Markets continue to climb higher each week. Quality is good. 

– Limes market is beginning to soften more quickly on small fruit as overall availability increases. Recent rain events have promoted fruit growth and coloring but may lead to quality issues especially on big fruit. Large fruit will remain short for the foreseeable future. Expect a price gap between small and large sizes as the market descends. Overall quality is good. 

Tomatoes: 

Markets are steady with plenty of supplies on both coasts. Mexico had a slight dip in volume due to Easter but expect better production by mid-week. Baja has started production lightly and Eastern Mexico is moderate. Florida’s weather has been great with good yields and quality. Fruit is peaking on the larger size. 

Cabbage: 

– Green Cartons: markets are steady. Quality has been good. 

– Red Cartons: Markets are steady. Quality has been good. 

– Bagged Cabbage: Markets are steady. Quality is fair to good.
