February 6th, 2025 Market Report

 Lettuce:

Lettuce markets are markets. Moderate production is expected throughout the week, with favorable weather conditions supporting stronger supply next week. Weights are expected to range from 39-44 pounds. While some misshapen heads and slight outer leaf discoloration are still being seen, overall quality remains above average with multiple shippers. Quality is fair to good.

Leaf:

  • Romaine markets are steady. While some blistering and peeling have been reported on leaf items, these issues remain minimal for now. Quality is good.
  • Romaine Heart markets are steady. While some blistering and peeling have been reported on leaf items, these issues remain minimal for now. Quality is good.
  • Green Leaf markets are steady. While some blistering and peeling have been reported on leaf items, these issues remain minimal for now. Quality is good.
  • Red Leaf markets are steady. While some blistering and peeling have been reported on leaf items, these issues remain minimal for now. Quality is good.

Lettuce Tender Leaf:

Arcadian, Spring Mix, Spinach, Cilantro, Arugula, and Italian Parsley. Markets are steady. Quality is good.

Broccoli:

California markets are coming off. Quality is good.

Mexico, Georgia, and Florida are near the bottom. Quality is good.

Cauliflower:

Supplies are improving with warmer weather, while the market remains steady across all regions. Quality is good.

Carrots:

  • Cello markets are steady out West. Canada is winding down, costs are steady, but elevated. Staring to see quotes out of Florida and Mexico on new crop. Costs are elevated. Quality has been good.
  • Loose Mexican crossings are steady to off slightly with good quality. Canada market is steady, but winding down. Georgia is a week or two behind on Jumbos with the recent cold snap. Cellos have started in Georgia in a very small way. Quality has been very nice.
  • Value-add Snack Carrots are steady. Quality is good.

Celery:

Markets are still coming down. Quality is good.

Strawberries & Bush Berries: Alert

  • Strawberry markets are steady/ strong with limited supply on both conventional and stems for the Valentine’s holiday. The recent cold snap in Florida has really slowed production and growers are having a tough time keeping up with the additional demand. Weather looks to be improving, so we should see better availability as we head into next week. Cold weather continues to limit production in California. Mexico is moving up in cost as well as demand moves there from other regions. Quality has been good on inbound.
  • Raspberry markets are very active and sold out. Production remains highly limited due to cold temperatures in the growing regions, creating a demand-exceeds-supply situation. Quality is fair.
  • Blueberries markets are moving up as the Peruvian season winds down, with Chile stepping in to fill the gap. Cold weather in Central Mexico is slowing production down. Quality is fair to good.
  • Blackberries markets are up and active. Supplies remain tight from Central Mexico, impacted by cold temperatures and last Monday’s Mexican National Holiday, which slowed production early in the week. Quality is fair to good.

Pineapples:

Market remains strong for next week with continued light or delayed arrivals from South America. Quality has been good on recent arrivals from Costa Rica.

Potatoes:

The Potato market is steady. Quality has been good.

Onions:

The Onion market is steady. Quality has been good.

Cucumbers:

  • Cucumber The market is steady with Florida just about wrapped up on their fall/ winter crop. We will have product from Honduras and Mexico near term. Quality has been good on inbound.
  • Euro Cucumbers this market is steady at the lower end. Quality is fair to good.

Squash:

The green squash market has declined sharply for next week with more fields coming on. Yellow squash remains elevated with very little good quality squash available. Quality has been good.

Eggplant:

Market is up a few dollars on both Florida and Mexican eggplant and the quality has been good overall.

Peppers:

  • Green bell market is steady to a little lower for next week. Quality on inbound has been good.
  • Red Pepper markets are trading at the lower end with better availability in Mexico. Quality has been good on recent inbounds.
  • Chile Pepper Jalapeno pepper market steady to a little stronger over last week. Quality has been sharp on recent arrivals. Long hot peppers remain high, but continue to adjust down slowly. Very spotty availability on most other specialty pepper.

Herbs:

  • Basil: quality is fair.

Citrus:

  • Orange: Peak sizes remain at 138ct/113ct, but are trending towards larger sizes. Prices are rising for smaller oranges, and as the season progresses, we expect the peak sizing to shift to 113ct/88ct. Brix levels are currently in the 13 range. Quality is good.
  • Lemon: Markets remain steady across the board. District 3 (CA Desert/AZ) is performing well and will continue through February. Meanwhile, District 1 (San Joaquin Valley) has started off light but is expected to ramp up in the coming weeks. Quality is good.
  • Limes: Strong demand continues this week with the Super Bowl approaching. Overall imports last week were down about 35% from the previous week out of Mexico, leading to less supplies in the market place. Despite this, overall pricing eased slightly, but is expected to firm back up in the coming weeks. Expect to see availability on the 110/150ct sizes to continue to tighten up. Overall quality is getting a little better, particularly on the small sizes. We are still seeing the occasional issue with stylar and skin breakdown on the large sizes due to the age of the fruit. This is the time of year where the color of the fruit is lighter overall due to less sun and more cloud cover in Mexico.

Grapes:

The imported grape market has softened again slightly. We have new crop Chilean fruit in stock. We should see more fruit arriving as we head into the coming weeks. Quality is looking good on the imports.

  • Green Cartons: Markets are steady/ strong on green cabbage from Canada and New York. Cabbage from the South remains light in volume with strong costs. Quality has been sharp on inbound.
  • Red Cartons: Markets are elevated with light supplies. Quality is good.
  • Bagged Cabbage: Market is steady with fair to good supplies out of NY and Canada.

Tomatoes:

Market on round tomatoes is just off the bottom. Grape tomatoes along with Roma tomatoes are steady near the bottom. Cherry tomatoes are steady and the only tomato with any demand on the market.

Cabbage:

Melons: Alert

  • Cantaloupes: Offshore melon supply remains tight, with demand exceeding available supply. Lower yields in Guatemala, combined with ongoing port delays, have intensified market pressures.
  • Honeydew: Offshore melon supply remains tight, with demand exceeding available supply. Lower yields in Guatemala, combined with ongoing port delays, have intensified market pressure.
