Market Outlook
Primo Weekly Market Update
Lettuce:
The lettuce market is moving up a few dollars. We continue to see good quality on inbound.
Leaf:
Romaine and romaine hearts are steady. Both green and red leaf markets are steady to up a few dollars depending on shipper. We are seeing mostly good quality on inbound.
Broccoli:
The broccoli market is steady and at the bottom for next week. Plenty of supplies are available from multiple growing areas. Quality has been good on inbound.
Cauliflower:
The cauliflower market is lower with supplies improving. Quality has been very good.
Carrots:
The carrot market is about steady on new crop out of Canada. Quality has been good with plenty of availability.
Celery:
The celery market is about steady. We have Eastern as well as well as California in stock. We are seeing good quality on inbound.
Strawberries:
Markets have steadied from last week. Quality has ranged from only fair to good.
Potatoes:
The Idaho potato market is about steady. We will be in full swing new crop by next week as Norkotah’s are starting to arrive.
Onions:
The yellow onion market is about steady, as we are in full swing with product out of Idaho and Oregon. Prices have been coming off weekly on western product. New York onions are still on the high side and we will look to have them in stock when pricing makes sense.
Citrus:
The California lemon market remains very strong, but has eased somewhat depending on size. Quality on the fruit has been good to very good. We have good quality Chilean fruit available in most sizes. Chile will be winding down and Mexico will ramp up. California oranges are in pretty good supply on large sizes, but small fruit is tightening and will likely move up in cost with schools starting. We are seeing good quality on inbound. The Lime market is steady from last week. We are seeing mostly good quality on inbound.
Cucumbers:
The cucumber market is up a few dollars on Selects, and product has gotten extremely tight coming out of New Jersey and Michigan. Expect pricing to continue to jump.
Peppers:
The green pepper market is steady with good supplies available; pricing has been on the low side. Product has been good overall.
Tomatoes:
The round tomato market is up a few dollars for next week. Very few quality tomatoes available in the East. Grapes are steady with product available in New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia. Cherry tomatoes are about steady. The Roma market is up by a few dollars.
Recipe of the Week
Nectarine and Radish Salsa
2 1/4 cups (1/4-inch) diced nectarines
1 1/2 cups radishes, halved lengthwise and thinly sliced
1/2 cup chopped cucumber
1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
2 teaspoons chopped fresh cilantro
1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
Preparation
- Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl; toss well. Let the salsa mixture stand 30 minutes.
