August 30th, 2023 Market Report

 Lettuce: 

Lettuce markets are steady. Weights are being reported around 39 to 44 pounds. Expect to see slight discoloration and misshapen heads. Quality is fair to good. 

Leaf: 

Romaine markets are up. Expect to see slight fringe / tip burn and brown butts. Quality fair to good. 

Romaine Heart markets are up. Quality is fair to good. 

Green Leaf markets are up. Expect to see slight fringe / tip burn and brown butts. Quality fair to good. 

Red Leaf markets are steady. Quality is good. 

Lettuce Tender Leaf: Alert 

Arcadian, Arugula, Spring Mix, Italian Parsley, & Cilantro Expect to see yellowing and wilting. There is an AOG increase on all Cilantro value-added products. Quality is fair. 

Spinach supplies will remain tight through next week due to hot weather early in the growing season, which affected seed germination and resulted in uneven stands and lower yields. Shippers are prorating and covering 100% of a 6-week average. Expect to see yellowing and wilting. Quality is fair. 

Broccoli: Alert 

Markets are up. Supplies are tight across all growing regions. There is an AOG increase on all value-added products. Quality is fair to good. 

Cauliflower: Alert 

Markets are up and active due to recent heat. There is an AOG increase on all value-added products. Quality is fair to good. 

Carrots: 

Cello markets are steady out West. Canada crop is in great shape with great quality. Costs are steady. 

Loose market is steady on Mexican crossings with good quality. Canada market is steady. Quality has been very nice. 

Value-add Snack Carrots are steady. Quality is good. 

Celery: 

California markets are slightly up while Canada markets are steady. Quality is good. 

Strawberries & Bush Berries: Alert 

Strawberry markets are up. Supplies are continuing to decline in the Watsonville and Salinas areas as their season winds down. Quality is fair to good. 

Raspberry markets are steady, but still limited. Quality fair to good. 

Blueberries markets are up and very active. The Pacific Northwest season is winding down quickly due to weather and rising demand from school business. There will be a gap until Central Mexico, Baja, and Peru start their seasons in late September or early October. Quality is fair to good. 

Blackberries markets are up and still limited. Quality is fair to good. 

Pineapples: 

Market is steady from last week. Quality has been good on recent arrivals from Costa Rica. 

Potatoes: 

The Potato market is strong. With new crop just starting, all potatoes will be tight for the next week or so. 

Onions: 

The onion market is steady. Quality has been fair to good. 

Cucumbers: 

Cucumber The market is higher with light volume on both selects and supers. Recent storms and heavy rainfall have affected harvest and yields. We are sourcing from New Jersey, Canada, and Pa. Quality has been good on inbound. 

Euro Cucumbers markets are higher!! Great quality and larger size cucumbers continue to bring a few dollars more. 

Squash: 

The green squash market is steady with fair supplies in NJ. Yellow squash remains high with very limited supplies of good quality squash. Excessive rain has kept supplies tight. We will have a mix of New Jersey, New York and Canadian product for next week. Primo Weekly Market Update 8/30/24 

Eggplant: 

Quality on New Jersey Eggplant has been fair on recent arrivals. Quality is good, but we are seeing some wind scarring on the skin. Market is much higher with very light volume. 

Peppers: 

Green bell market is pretty steady on green pepper. Quality on inbound has been good. New Jersey. NY and Canada all into good volume. 

Red Pepper markets continue to decline with supplies improving. Quality has been fair to good on recent inbounds. 

Chile Pepper Jalapeno pepper market is steady. Quality has been sharp on recent arrivals. New Jersey has moved into good volume. Mexico has good supplies and the market is steady 

Herbs: 

Basil: quality is good. 

Citrus: 

  • Orange Alert Markets out of California are very active and sold out. Shippers are only covering Contracts. There is a peak in fruit production for 72ct and larger; 88/113/138ct are extremely scarce and will remain so until the end of the Val season. Quality is good. 
  • Import Orange market remains high with vessels delayed. Product is very short. Quality has been good on both South African and Chilean fruit. 
  • Lemon Markets out of California are steady on sizes 115ct and larger. Markets on sizes 140ct and smaller are steady and extremely tight. Quality is good 
  • Imports are steady with good quality. 
  • Limes 
  • Ongoing rain continues to cause quality issues showing up as stylar, thinner skins, and oil spotting. We are trying to let the fruit sit a few extra days to allow for defects to pop up before running it and regrading it for shipping. Overall supplies are down from what we typically see this time of year. We will continue 
  • current crop finishes up. Large fruit will become extremely tight as the new crop remains heavy on the 230/250ct sizes. 

Grapes: 

Markets are steady red and green grapes. Quality has been good on California fruit. 

Tomatoes: 

The market on round tomatoes is a little lower with very light volume on the east coast. Many East coast shippers are gapping. Romas out of the south and Mexico are higher. Grape tomatoes along with cherries are steady to higher. 

Cabbage: 

Green Cartons: Markets are steady on green cabbage. Canada, New York, Pa, and NJ all in production. Quality has been sharp on inbound. 

Red Cartons: Markets are elevated with good demand. Quality is good. 

Bagged Cabbage: We have bag cabbage in stock from NY and Canada. Market steady.
