August 8th, 2024 Market Report

 Lettuce: 

Lettuce markets are slightly up. Weights are being reported around 39 to 44 pounds. Quality is good. 

Leaf: 

Romaine markets are steady. Expect to see minimal fringe and tip burn due to the high temperatures from recent weeks. Quality fair to good. 

Romaine Heart markets are steady. Quality is good. 

Green Leaf markets are up. Expect to see minimal fringe and tip burn due to the high temperatures from recent weeks. Quality is fair to good. 

Red Leaf markets are slightly up. Quality is good. 

Lettuce Tender Leaf: 

Arcadian, Arugula, Spinach, Spring Mix, & Italian Parsley have been significantly affected by the recent high temperatures. Expect to see yellowing and wilting. Quality is fair. 

Cilantro have been significantly affected by the recent high temperatures. Growers are experiencing cilantro going to seed, leading to decreased yields are quality issues. There is an AOG increase on all value-added products. Expect supplies to be light through next week. Quality is fair. 

Broccoli: 

Markets are coming off. Supplies are lower due to recent heat accelerating field growth. There is an AOG increase on all value-added products. Quality is fair to good. 

Cauliflower: 

Markets have come back down. Quality is good. 

Carrots: 

Cello markets are steady out West. Canada crop is coming on. Costs are steady. Quality is good. 

Loose market is just a little lower on Mexican crossings with good quality. Canada continues with very light volume. Quality has been very nice. 

Value-add Snack Carrots are steady. Quality is good. 

Primo Weekly Market Update 8/8/24 

Celery: 

Mexico, California, and Canada markets are slightly down. Quality is good. 

Strawberries & Bush Berries: 

Strawberry markets are up. Supplies are continuing to decline in the Watsonville and Salinas areas as their season winds down. Quality is fair to good. 

Raspberry markets are steady and expected to adjust downward next week. Quality fair to good. 

Blueberries markets are up in both the West and East. Quality is good. 

Blackberries markets are steady, but still in light supply. As the fruit becomes more difficult to handle and harvest due to excessive heat and rain. Quality is fair. 

Pineapples: 

Market is off slightly from last week. Quality has been good on recent arrivals from Costa Rica. 

Potatoes: 

The Potato market is strong. 40’s through 80’s continues to be tight. Quality has been fair. New Crop is expected to start August 19th. 

Onions: 

The onion market is steady. Pricing should hold steady as long as weather cooperates. Quality has been fair to good 

Cucumbers: 

Cucumber The market is steady with light volume on both selects and supers. We are sourcing from New Jersey, Canada, and Pa. Quality has been good on inbound. 

Euro Cucumbers markets are steady. Great quality and larger size cucumbers continue to bring a few dollars more. 

Squash: 

The green and yellow squash market is a little higher with fair to good supplies in NJ. Excessive rain this week all along the East coast will likely drive markets up further. We will have New Jersey and PA product for next week. Primo Weekly Market Update 8/8/24 

Eggplant: 

Quality on New Jersey Eggplant has been good on recent arrivals. Market is steady. 

Peppers: 

Green bells 

The market has adjusted down on all green pepper. Quality on inbound has been good. New Jersey is coming into volume. 

Red Pepper markets are very strong with supplies critically short. Quality has been fair to good on recent inbounds. 

Chile Pepper Jalapeno pepper market is lower. Quality has been sharp on recent arrivals. New Jersey has moved into good volume. Mexico has moved into better supplies and costs are lower. 

Herbs: 

Basil: quality is good. 

Citrus: 

  • Orange Markets out of California are very active and sold out. Shippers are only covering Contracts. There is a peak in fruit production for 72ct and larger; 88/113/138ct are extremely scarce and will remain so until the end of the Val season. Quality is good. 
  • Import Orange market is steady. Quality has been good on both South African and Chilean fruit. 
  • Lemon Markets out of California are steady on sizes 115ct and larger. Markets on sizes 140ct and smaller are up and extremely tight. Quality is good 
  • Import Lemon market is steady. Quality is good. 
  • Limes – Shippers are currently seeing a good amount of stylar on inbound fruit causing most product to have to be rerun prior to shipping. The current lime crop is also in the process of winding down and will come to an end over the next month or so. The next crop up is currently running about 30 days behind schedule, which has the potential to cause a short gap in supplies out of Mexico around mid Sept.

Grapes: 

Markets are steady/ strong on red and green grapes. Quality has been very nice on California fruit. 

Tomatoes: 

The market on round tomatoes is higher with very light volume on the east coast. Many East coast shippers are gapping. Romas out of the south and Mexico remain strong. California just starting. Grape tomatoes remain strong with very limited supplies available. Cherry tomatoes are steady/ strong. 

Cabbage: 

Green Cartons: Markets are steady to up a few dollars depending on source. Canada, New York, Pa, and NJ all in production. Quality has been sharp on inbound. 

Red Cartons: Markets are steady. Quality is good. 

Bagged Cabbage: We have new crop bag cabbage in stock from NY and Canada. Market steady.
