June 27th, 2024 Market Report

 Lettuce: 

Lettuce markets are coming off as supplies are improving. Weights are ranging from 38-46 pounds. There is an AOG increase on all Lettuce Value-add products. Quality is fair to good. 

Leaf: 

Romaine markets are coming steady. Expect to see slight fringe and tip burn. Quality fair to good. 

Romaine Heart markets are still coming off. Quality is good. 

Green and Red Leaf markets are steady. Expect to see slight fringe and tip burn. Quality is fair to good. 

Lettuce Tender Leaf: 

Arcadian, Arugula, Spinach and Spring Mix markets are steady. Quality is fair to good. 

Italian Parsley & Cilantro markets are active. Quality is battling bacterial spotting as a result of all the rain and excessive moisture. 

Broccoli: 

Markets are coming off, but still active and sold out. There is a shortage of broccoli in Salinas, Santa Maria, and Mexico. Fields are showing pin rot, yellow beads, hollow cores and decay reducing production. At harvest, most of these quality issues are visible and harvesters are leaving the affected heads behind. The this an AOG increase on all Broccoli Value-add products. Quality is fair. 

Cauliflower: 

Markets are steady at the bottom. Quality is good. 

Carrots: 

Cello markets are steady out West and stronger in Georgia. Quality is good. 

Loose market is higher again on Mexican crossings with fair to good quality, and also much higher in Georgia. Carrots are not sizing up, and there is a lot of pressure on the Jumbo market. 

Value-add Snack Carrots are steady. Quality is good.

Celery: 

Mexico Celery markets are steady while California Celery markets continue to come down. Quality is good. 

Strawberries & Bush Berries: 

Strawberry markets are up. In anticipation of the 4th of July holiday, strawberry demand has increased leaving shippers short of immediate open market supplies. This temporary shortage is due to aggressive retail promotions. The Santa Maria area is finished, putting more pressure on Salinas and Watsonville. On the front end of next week, we should expect this uptick in the market to fade as the holiday demand dissipates. Quality is good. 

Raspberry markets are up. Quality is good. 

Blueberries markets are higher on both North Carolina and New Jersey. The better-quality fruit is in NJ. 

Blackberries markets have come down slightly. Quality is good. 

Pineapples: 

Market is steady to up slightly for next week. Quality has been good on recent arrivals. 

Potatoes: 

The Potato market is at the bottom. Pricing is firming up on 40cts through 80cts. Quality has been fair. 

Onions: 

The onion market is strong. Pricing is starting to fall off a bit. Quality has been fair to good 

Cucumbers: 

Cucumber The market is about steady on both selects and supers. We are sourcing from North Carolina, New Jersey and Pa. Quality has been good on inbound. 

Euro Cucumbers markets are up slightly. Great quality and larger size cucumbers continue to bring a few dollars more. 

Primo Weekly Market Update 6/27/24 

Squash: 

The green and yellow squash market is steady at the lower end with good supplies in NJ. We will have New Jersey and North Carolina product for next week. 

Eggplant: 

Eggplant supply and costs are steady on product from North Carolina. Quality has been good on recent arrivals. New jersey should start in 10-14 days. 

Peppers: 

Green bells market remains strong on all green pepper with limited supplies available in the South. Quality on inbound has been good overall. New Jersey has just started with very limited volume. 

Red Pepper markets are higher with fair supplies. New crop California in stock. Quality has been sharp on recent inbounds. 

Chile Pepper Jalapeno pepper supply is a little higher on southern product. Quality has been sharp on recent arrivals. Mexico is light on volume and costs remain high. 

Herbs: 

Basil: quality is good. 

Citrus: 

  • Orange Markets out of California are firm. Valencia’s are the main variety now. There is a peak in fruit production for 72ct and larger; 88/113/138ct are extremely scarce and will remain so until the end of the navel season. Quality is good. 
  • Import Orange market is steady. Quality is fair to good. 
  • Lemon Markets out of California are steady on sizes 115ct and larger. Markets on sizes 140ct and smaller are up and extremely tight. Quality is good 
  • Import Lemon market is steady. Quality is good. 
  • Lime Mexico finally received some much-needed rain and still has 60%+ chance of rain every day for the next week. While rain was desperately needed, it will temporarily cause additional quality issues over the next several weeks, and

how much it continues. Large fruit continues to be very limited and at a premium. 

Grapes: 

Markets are steady on red and green grapes. Quality has been very nice on Mexican fruit. We will transition from Mexico to California fruit in the next 10-14 days. 

Tomatoes: 

The market on round tomatoes is up a few dollars. Romas out of both Florida and Mexico are much higher. Good quality out of both Florida and Mexico. Grape tomatoes are much higher with very limited supplies available. Cherry tomatoes are also moving up. 

Cabbage: 

  • Green Cartons: Markets are a little higher. Georgia and North Carolina finishing. Quality has been sharp on inbound. We will have new Jersey product in stock. 
  • Red Cartons: Markets are up slightly. Quality is good. 
  • Bagged Cabbage: Supplies are tight and costs are steady but elevated. Quality is fair to good.
