Lettuce:
Lettuce markets are up. Supplies remain strong, with production ongoing in Huron, Santa Maria, and Salinas. Yuma will start next week for some shippers. Weights from all regions are reported to range from 38 to 44 pounds among most shippers. Expect to see slight discoloration and misshapen heads. Quality is fair to good.
Leaf:
- Romaine markets are up. Production of Romaine is currently available from Huron, Salinas, and Santa Maria. Yuma will start next week for some shippers. Expect to see slight tip and fringe burn. Quality is fair to good.
- Romaine Heart markets are up. Production of Romaine Hearts is currently available from Huron, Salinas, and Santa Maria. Yuma will start next week for some shippers. Expect to see slight pinked ribs. Quality is good.
- Green Leaf markets are up. Production of Green Leaf is currently available from Huron, Salinas, and Santa Maria. Yuma will start next week for some shippers. Expect to see slight tip and fringe burn. Quality is good.
- Red Leaf markets are up. Production of Red Leaf is currently available from Huron, Salinas, and Santa Maria. Yuma will start next week for some shippers. Quality is good.
Lettuce Tender Leaf:
- Arcadian, Spring Mix, & Spinach. These items have faced elevated temperatures over the past week, impacting quality. Quality is fair to good.
- Cilantro, Arugula, and Italian Parsley. Expect to see slightly lower supplies due to recent heat, which is causing issues such as leaf damage and a weak thinner texture. Quality is fair to good.
Broccoli: Alert
Markets are very active out West. Insect pressure, along with brown bead and premature breakdown, are limiting available acres. There is an AOG increase on all value-added products. Product coming out of Canada, Maine, and Mexico are in better supply. Quality is fair to good.
Cauliflower: Alert
Markets are very active. Expect to see some instances of brown spotting due to recent heat. There is an AOG increase on all value-added products. Quality is fair to good.
Carrots:
- Cello markets are steady out West. Canada crop is in great shape with great quality. Costs are steady on Canadian product for this coming week.
- Loose market remains high on Mexican crossings with good quality. Canada market is steady. Quality has been very nice.
- Value-add Snack Carrots are steady. Quality is good.
Celery:
California markets are slightly up. Quality is good.
Strawberries & Bush Berries: Alert
- Strawberry markets are very active and sold out. Production this week out of Salinas and Santa Maria growing regions is down again. Last week shippers experienced a hefty drop on production of about 40% over the prior week. This week they are looking at another 10-20% drop in production. This drop in production is due to cooler overnight temps and shorter days. Quality is fair to good.
- Raspberry markets are up. A brief planting gap in Baja is leading to tighter supplies on the West Coast, but this should ease as we approach mid-November. Meanwhile, small shipments from Central Mexico are arriving at the border daily, with some being transferred to California. Quality is fair to good.
- Blueberries markets continue to move down on Peruvian imports with better supplies arriving. Costs are a little softer for next week. Quality is fair too good.
- Blackberries markets are steady. Supplies remain limited from Central Mexico and Baja. Quality is fair to good.
Pineapples:
Market is lower on product from Costa Rica. Quality has been good on recent arrivals from Costa Rica.
Potatoes:
The Potato market is steady. Quality has been good.
Onions:
The onion market is steady. Quality has been good.
Cucumbers:
- Cucumber The market is much stronger with lighter volume on both selects and supers. NJ is done for the season. Very light volume in the Carolinas and Georgia. Quality has been good on inbound.
- Euro Cucumbers markets are steady at the lower end. Quality is good.
Squash:
The green squash market is steady to slightly lower with fair supplies in NJ. Shippers are just starting in the Carolinas and Georgia. Yellow squash is steady with limited supplies of good quality squash.
Eggplant:
Quality on New Jersey Eggplant has been sharp on recent arrivals. Market is higher with very light volume. Very light harvest in Georgia.
Peppers:
- Green bell market is extremely tight on quality green pepper and costs have moved up significantly. Quality on inbound has been fair to good. New Jersey is just about finished and very tight on new crop Georgia.
- Red Pepper markets are higher with only fair supplies. Quality has been good on recent inbounds.
- Chile Pepper Jalapeno pepper market is a little higher with product in shorter supply. Quality has been sharp on recent arrivals.
Herbs:
- Basil: quality is fair.
Citrus: Alert
- Orange Markets out of California are very active and sold out. Valencia oranges have concluded their season. Navel oranges have begun shipping lightly, with expectations to ramp up over the next few weeks. The initial peak sizes on the smaller side (113ct & 138ct). Sizes 88ct to 40ct are currently in very tight supply. Presently, gassing times for the navels are approximately 96 hours. Quality is fair to good.
- Import Orange market remains high with vessels delayed. Product is very short. There are some Mexican imports starting, but are very limited. Quality is good.
- Lemon Markets out of California are steady. In District 2 (Oxnard/Ventura County), year-round shipments continue, but supplies are decreasing, with quality ranging from fair to good. Meanwhile, District 3 (California Desert/AZ) is ramping up, and shippers anticipate improved quality as they transition to the new crop fruit. Quality is good.
- The Chilean season is just about done. Costs are higher. We will transition to Mexico and California in the coming weeks.
- Limes Pricing continues to be stable on the mid to small sizes. The 110/150ct eased off a little more since last week and looks to be leveling out now. The quality of the fruit coming in continues to improve with the majority of the issues being scarring and oil spots, which are getting graded out as much as possible prior to shipping from the US. As quality has improved, the supply on #2s has gone down some. Green Cartons: Markets are steady to higher on green cabbage. Cooler weather is slowing volume. Canada, New York, Pa, and NJ all in production. Quality has been sharp on inbound.
- Red Cartons: Markets are steady with good supplies. Quality is good.
- Bagged Cabbage: Market is steady with fair to good supplies out of NY and Canada.
Grapes:
Markets are steady for red, but slightly up on green grapes. Quality is fair to good.
Tomatoes: Alert
Markets on rounds are much stronger. Supply is light overall. Florida has started harvesting only a few days per week. In the West, supplies are light as California finishes. Mexico crossings are light. Cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes along with plum tomatoes are in short supply.
